Built on over 600-acres of land with over 5,000 beds, Rockland State Hospital included its own coal power plant, a farm, and industrial shops where patients worked manufacturing various things like furniture and household products. At the time, it was thought that through hard work and manual labor that one could overcome their mental illness.
